If you’ve noticed the XP100 nozzle at Bowring Station and wondered whether it’s worth the extra cost, here’s a straightforward breakdown.
What is XP100?
XP100 is Indian Oil Corporation’s premium petrol, with an octane rating of 100. Standard petrol at Indian pumps has an octane rating of 91. The number refers to the fuel’s resistance to ‘knocking’, the premature ignition that can damage modern engines and reduce efficiency.
Who is it for?
XP100 is most beneficial if your vehicle falls into one of these categories:
- Luxury cars: Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volvo, Porsche – most of which recommend 95+ octane
- Turbocharged engines: Many modern Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, and Skoda engines with direct injection
- Performance motorcycles: KTM, Triumph, Ducati, and similar bikes
- Older, high-compression engines where knocking has been a problem
Will it make a difference in a regular hatchback or sedan?
In a standard 800cc–1200cc petrol engine tuned for 91 octane, the real-world benefit of XP100 is marginal. The engine management system isn’t designed to take advantage of the higher-octane rating. For these vehicles, regular petrol is the right choice.
If your vehicle manufacturer recommends premium petrol, XP100 is the best option available at Indian pumps. If you drive a standard commuter vehicle, regular petrol serves you just as well. When in doubt, check your owner’s manual – it will specify the minimum octane rating your engine requires.
XP100 is available at Bowring Station 24/7. Ask our attendants if you need guidance on whether your vehicle benefits from it.
